Sentenced to death, the Hollow ninja Gabimaru faces his impending execution with indifference. Despite a life steeped in bloodshed, Gabimaru harbors the belief that his demise is a just fate. Strangely, every attempt to carry out his sentence inexplicably falters. In a twist of fate, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a novice from a renowned executioner clan, is tasked with ending Gabimaru's life. However, Sagiri, defying expectations, refrains from executing the condemned ninja as instructed.
Refuting the idea of Gabimaru's demise, Sagiri contends that his unwavering love for his wife prevents him from meeting his end. Instead of carrying out the execution, Sagiri proposes a different path for Gabimaru. He offers the condemned ninja the opportunity to secure a complete pardon for his crimes. To achieve this absolution, Gabimaru must embark on a perilous journey to the distant island of Shinsekyo and retrieve the elusive Elixir of Life, reputed to grant immortality. If Gabimaru succeeds in obtaining the elixir and returns it to the shogun, his freedom will be guaranteed.
However, the quest is fraught with peril, as no one who has ventured to Shinsekyo in pursuit of the mythical elixir has ever returned unscathed or, in some cases, not at all. Despite the unknown dangers ahead, Gabimaru decides to accept the offer, joining forces with ten other death row convicts. His motivation is to secure a future of peace for himself and his wife, even though the challenges that lie ahead remain unbeknownst to him.
