Rakurou Hizutome, a high school student, has an unusual pastime: indulging in poorly crafted games—ones notorious for their imbalance or abundance of bugs, rendering them nearly unplayable. Identified by his in-game alias, Sunraku, among a select few who share his peculiar hobby, Rakurou receives a recommendation for a change of pace: Shangri-La Frontier, a widely acclaimed virtual reality game known for its polish and popularity.
Upon entering the game, Rakurou opts to liquidate most of his initial equipment for extra currency, leaving himself with a mere set of boxers, a bird mask, and a handful of weapons. Engrossed in meticulously leveling up his virtual avatar, he finds himself captivated by the experience. However, as he encounters formidable foes within the game, he realizes he may have underestimated the challenges posed by a mainstream title.
As Rakurou advances through the game, he must tap into the array of skills honed through his past gaming exploits. Before long, Sunraku's idiosyncratic approach to gameplay begins to leave its mark on Shangri-La Frontier, causing a stir among its player base.
